Treatment of ulnar and median nerve function loss in borderline leprosy.

چکیده
A rigid corti co-steroid treatment regimen was given to borderline leprosy patients who had recent nerve function loss due to reversal reaction. In order to record nerve function changes objectively a nerve index was used which was based on the results of voluntary muscle testing and sensory testing. Ninetythreeulnar and median nerves were followed in this study. Improvement in ulnar nerve function was obtained in 60% and in the median nerve in 67%. Overall improvement was better in BL nerves (85%) when compared with BT nerves (51 %). The results show a more rapid recovery of median nerve function as compared to the ulnar nerve. There was a slightly better recovery of nerve function in previously untreated leprosy patients (69%) as compared to patients who developed nerve function loss while on anti-leprosy treatment (59%).

Intraneural injection of corticosteroids to treat nerve damage in leprosy: a case report and review of literature
INTRODUCTION Nerve damage in leprosy patients leads to deformities and disabilities. Oral corticosteroids are given early to prevent permanent injury. We present a new approach to treat well-established nerve damage with local injection of corticosteroids. CASE PRESENTATION A 60-year-old leprosy patient presented with right claw hand deformity secondary to right ulnar and median neuropathy. M...
متن کاملSurgical treatment of type I neuritis in a teenage boy with borderline tuberculoid leprosy.
Exacerbation of the immune response against Mycobacterium leprae can lead to neuritis, which is commonly treated via immunosuppression with corticosteroids. Early neurolysis may be performed concurrently, especially in young patients with a risk of functional sequelae. We report the case of a young patient experienced intense pain in the left elbow one year after the treatment of tuberculoid-tu...
متن کاملReliability of Upper Limb Neurodynamic Tests: Median, Radial and Ulnar Nerves
Objective: in the evaluation of peripheral nerves, upper limb neurodynamic tests are used to assess the mechanical sensitivity of the nerve. However, very little is known about the reliability of upper limb neurodynamic tests, especially for the radial and ulnar nerves. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of neurodynamic tests of the upper extremities including median, radial ...
متن کاملCASE REPORT Magnetic resonance imaging of ulnar nerve abscess in leprosy: a case report
A 14-year-old girl on multidrug treatment for borderline tuberculoid leprosy presented with a swelling in her left arm and soon thereafter developed an ulnar claw hand. MRI showed a well-defined ovoid lesion arising from the left ulnar nerve, isointense to muscle onT1W images and hyperintense on T2W and STIR images. On post-gadolinium T1W sequence, the lesion showed peripheral rim enhancement w...
متن کاملThe use of the voluntary muscle test in leprosy neuritis.
There are 2 main problems in leprosy, the presence of leprosy bacilli and the presence of deformity. Except in the rare instances where deformity follows lepromatous infiltration of skin or bones, deformity in the limbs is secondary to involvement of peripheral nerves by the leprosy disease process . Cochrane ( 1 964) has emphasised that unless neuritis is 'taken in hand at once, serious and cr...
